~the haunted tea-cosy~

January 1st, 2008

It was like the first page in an Edward Gorey story: a lone glove lay grasping, or perhaps surrendering on the stair. We wandered around Historic Bethlehem in Philadelphia on a little New Years Day trip. We had found the one bagel shop open, and all the buildings built by the Protestant cult none of us had heard of, the Moravians, and now this.

My favorite letter in the Gorey alphabet The Gashlycrumb Tinies is N:

N is for Neville who died of Ennui.

It was not a day for ennui however, but of strange symbols and shimmering light.
Plus giant round hay bales, horses, goats, flying starlings, a tall headless winged woman carved from a tree, mysteriously prickly seed pods, and hot chocolate.

We listened to a cd the baby Jesus (aka Stefan) gave to Peggy of a band called Scout Niblett, whose singer sounds a bit like Bjork meets Joanna Newsom, piano something like Cat Power, and guitar like Black Sabbath.
At least thats what i heard from the back seat. Not too shabby, as my Grandpa would say…

The ladies discussed the notion of a Color of the Year, as determined by Panatone.
This year’s color is Blue Iris, or No. 18-3943, because it “brings together the dependable aspect of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast. Emotionally, it is anchoring and meditative with a touch of magic.”

Right then on the ground Peggy found a blue angel, an Iris Blue angel of Bethlehem.
Most auspicious.

Here are various soul-searching shades of blue for you…

Most auspicious indeed! 2007 is over, hallelujah! The angel seems to be trumpeting in a triumphant 2008.
