~portals to the present~

A twilight walk at the end of a very fine and changeful week. Much social flurry, many library treasures, experiments in Asian cooking, heartfelt talking, late night reading, slowly, organically finding a rhythm in the new year in our still newish city. Above and below is Lloyd Lake in Golden Gate Park. The black and […]

We tried our first steamed sticky cake–Nian Gao–eaten around Chinese New Year to appease the Kitchen God and bring good luck (The Chinese word 粘 (nián) is a homonym for both sticky and year, and the word 糕 (gāo) is a homonym for cake and high). Below, the view from the CO from Life Magazine, 1954. I feel the ghosts of my novel’s heroine and my own past out here.

~nyc addendum: all stars donuts~

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

“Wannadonut?” Ali slyly asks as we circle our neighborhood, looking for milk for morning coffee or a parking space, whichever comes first. This is how post Taxi-Subway-Airtrain-JFK-SFO-Bart the kids hit terre ferme and immediately homing pigeoned to All Stars Donuts. The inside sign looks at first glance like Donuts & Drunks, which is what you’d […]
