~cinque terre~

June 25th, 2009

After some days of half-vacationing and half-working, we suddenly came to our senses, abandoned all adult behavior, and thus were seized with the desire to see some of Cinque Terre.

We hightailed it to Monterosso al Mare to dinner on the terrace of the converted bunker at L’Ancora della Tortuga. There we had fresh cured anchovy, octopus, tuna, salmon, shrimp, and swordfish, possibly the best fish ever. After five days of pasta and wild boar, we were over the moon.

It was wonderful to see some water as well. Lesson learned: preferred non-urban travel spots are coastal, not land-locked, no matter how lovely. The landscape here reminds of the more southern Amalfi coast: gorgeously tiered, scruffy, jumbly, crumbling towns, deep blue sea. Casually romantic, and not unlike parts of my home state, except impossibly perched on a cluster of hills.

After dinner we hiked up to the cemetery (as every trip we embark upon must have at least one), but it was closed for the night. Instead we watched the band and the dancers under the sliver moon. A very lovely night.

Having visited ‘cinque terre’ a three years ago, I find your trip eqaully charmed and magical. We walked 4 of the 5 mountain paths linking the various cinque terre villages. Breath-taking views and great sandwiches stuffed witn veal or mortadella & cheese and taste slices of pizza. We stayed in Sestre Levanti a lovely seaside town full of holidaying Milanese. Here we ate a divine meal of pesto & pasta, and bits of fish, drank the local frothy, bubblely white and wandered the ancient streets happy as calms.

I spent one of the better nights of my life dancing on the beach in Monterosso. Did the whole hike too — did you?

hey michelle, didn’t know you came around these parts, greetings! we (as crazed travelers) were only there for dinner, so no hike. we promised to go back though… enchanting!
