Field trip to the Met today, to see Ricky Jay’s collection of drawings by handless artist Matthias Buchinger. They were extraordinary, but the one that most caught my eye was a portrait of Martin Luther by Buchinger’s presumed inspiration, Johann Püchler. This piece (about 2 x 4 inches), circa late 17th century, shows Luther with his own text for hair, including cowlick. A proto author portrait that’s very liter-hairy.
A few by Buchinger below.
