Sunrise over Amsterdam. Having a few hours between flights, we trained in with already hungover, costumed youth who looked like we felt. After a dense week and long red-eye, it was bracing when the train doors opened and a faux blood-covered nurse with peacock blue Rocky Horror eye make-up dragged in, flopped down, and promptly fell asleep.
7am on Halloween Sunday is a new way to experience this city. The canals were garbage-strewn with beer and such, but mostly french fries.
Half-finished fries were flung in all directions, as though in a drunken baby snack tantrum.
But above was a Baroque church ceiling sky,
as was below,
as were whole buildings filled with giant wheels of cheese,
and lions,
and trees with still Autumn leaves.
After our 21 hour door-to-door adventure we landed in Berlin, crashed like a candy-striper drag queen, and woke in time for a late night snack and stroll.
